Browns NT Shaun Rogers Fined For Carrying A Gun Into An Airport

The NFL decided Tuesday to fine the Cleveland Browns’ nose tackle Shaun Rogers and not suspend him for carrying a loaded gun into an airport.Rogers’ defensive line teammate Robaire Smith also was caught with a gun at airport security last year in Michigan. He has not heard from the league about a penalty.

Police said Rogers carried a semiautomatic handgun in a carry-on bag into Cleveland’s Hopkins International Airport in April. He reached a deal with prosecutors last month and was ordered to enter diversion program to avoid trial on the weapons charge.

Under the terms, the felony gun charge will be dismissed if the 31-year-old Rogers completes the program, which includes a gun course and community service.

The league said Rogers will be fined a one-game check — roughly $400,000, or 1/17th of his $6.9 million salary this season — for violating its personal conduct policy. The former Pro Bowler, who has not practiced this summer because of a leg injury that ended his season after 11 games in 2009, is appealing the decision.

Rogers said he wasn’t concerned about the league’s decision and that he would abide by whatever Commissioner Roger Goodell judged to be fair. Rogers said he never spoke with Goodell about the incident.

NFL Reportedly Will Adjust Where Umpire Is Stationed In The Offensive Backfield

Filed Under (NFL News) by admin on 01-09-2010

The New York Times reported that the NFL will inform teams Tuesday about tweaks to where the umpire will be stationed in the offensive backfield.

The adjustments are in response to a new rule that moved the umpire from the middle of the defense to 14 to 17 yards behind the offense for safety reasons. That was adjusted to 12 yards back after the Hall of Fame Game so the ball could be spotted quicker.Still, the rule drew criticism from Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, whose team was penalized twice for snapping the ball before the umpire was in position during a preseason game Thursday.

The latest tweaks, made after a conference call that included members of the league’s competition committee, include requiring the umpire only to be standing behind the deepest member of the offense, and quarterbacks can look at officials near the sidelines to get the go-ahead to snap the ball, rather than turn around and look for a signal from the umpire.

Super Bowl Dreams – 2010 NFL Preview of Green Bay Packers

nfl-jersey.net is counting down the days to the start of the 2010 NFL season with team-by-team previews. The previews are posted in descending order from worst to first.

The Green Bay Packers enter their third season of life after Favre as one of the trendy Super Bowl picks. Not many fans look longing back at what could have been if the recent grandfather was still playing for the Packers because we are focused on beating him twice a year, and his replacement at quarterback has already become one of the best in the NFL. The team is certainly one of the best on the offensive side, but a solid defense has some question marks concerning their depth in the secondary and whether they’ll be able to provide a consistent pass rush. Their weakness remains two fold: a terrible special teams unit, and an aggressive style of play on defense that leads to many penalties. It’s almost impossible to tell whether they’ll be better in either area until the regular season begins. But the team is relatively healthy and playing with a lot of confidence so far this preseason. Predictions of a Super Bowl appearance have been written about in many publications and for good reason: this is a very good football team.

Conclusion/predictions for 2010

I fully expect the Packers to return to the playoffs in 2010. Their poor 6-10 season in 2008 is now sandwiched between a 13-3 record in 2007 and 11-5 last season which proves that neither 2007 or 2009 was a fluke. The biggest question is whether the Packers can beat the Vikings. Their two losses versus Minnesota in 2009 were the difference between another 13-3 division championship and a 11-5 wild card berth. As I watch the Vikings lose multiple wide receivers due to injuries, I grow more optimistic, but they still have to play those games (which unfortunately don’t start until their October 24th matchup at Lambeau). Since I’m a true homer fan, I’ll take the over bet and I expect they’ll beat the Vikings twice, finish 13-3, and win the NFC North.

Surgery Is Not Necessary To Jones-Drew

Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio said on monday that Jaguars Pro Bowl running back Maurice Jones-Drew has not had knee surgery. It is not necessary,he’s working, rehabbing, strengthening and gearing up for the regular season.

Because of the team’s short week, Del Rio will not play Jones-Drew, who has a sometimes balky left knee, and most of the starters against Atlanta on Thursday.

“There’s always a fine line,” Del Rio said. “You want to work your guys, they need to be ready to go, they need to be playing at their best.”

Jones-Drew, who had 10 carries in the preseason last season, has only six carries for minus-two yards this preseason, but Del Rio said he’ll worry about the running back being in game shape later.

“I think in terms of ideal scenarios you’d like to have a little more active work going into it,” Del Rio said. “I think arriving to the regular season with him at full strength ready to take his turn, I think that’s most important rather than trying to decide whether or not he’s going to be able to carry it 30 or 35 carries.

A team spokesman said Jones-Drew declined to comment.

Unsure If Donovan McNabb Be Healthy For Dallas Game

McNabb sat out Friday’s game against the New York Jets and watched Sunday’s practice with a black sleeve on his left leg.He hasn’t practiced since spraining his left ankle in the second preseason game against Baltimore.

It was said McNabbb’s leg is too sore to play this week against the Arizona Cardinals, but McNabb likely wouldn’t have played in that game anyway because the coach prefers to rest his starter in the final exhibition to avoid injury. However, backup quarterback Rex Grossman said he won’t play this week either, perhaps as an insurance policy to make sure at least one of the top two quarterbacks on the roster is ready to go against the Cowboys on Sept. 12.

However, backup quarterback Rex Grossman said he won’t play this week either, perhaps as an insurance policy to make sure at least one of the top two quarterbacks on the roster is ready to go against the Cowboys on Sept. 12.

That leaves bubble quarterbacks John Beck and Richard Bartel taking the snaps Thursday at Arizona.

The news from Shanahan was more positive concerning running back Clinton Portis, who sprained his right ankle against the Jets.”I don’t think it’s too serious. It’s not a big setback,” Shanahan said. “I would anticipate him being able to practice in a couple of days.”

Fullback Mike Sellers, who missed the Jets game, remains day to day with a sprained left knee. Backup linebacker Perry Riley sprained his right ankle against New York and was wearing a walking boot Sunday.

2010 NFL Preview – Miami Dolphins

Filed Under (NFL Articles) by admin on 28-08-2010

Tagged Under : , ,

nfl-jersey.net is counting down the days to the start of the 2010 NFL season with team-by-team previews. The previews are posted in descending order from worst to first.

The Miami Dolphins head into year three of the “Bill Parcells era” looking to take that next step in the rebuilding process – a process that got off to a quick start in 2008 thanks to a favorable schedule, an unexpected offensive formation, and an unlikely villain-turned-hero under center. A new culture in Miami, the ‘Wildcat’ formation, and Chad Pennington were the three major pieces that led to the greatest single-season turnaround in NFL history and an AFC East title in ‘08. But last year was a trip back to reality for the Dolphins and their fans. Age and injuries took their toll as the Dolphins lost their final three games to end 2009 under .500.

Their disappointing finish in ‘09 has not dampened expectations for 2010, though. Owner Stephen Ross made headlines when he said that he expected the Dolphins to reach the Super Bowl. Head coach Tony Sparano didn’t back down when he was asked in training camp about his owner’s bold statement. And just like that, the bar has been set. A younger and far more talented team than they’ve had in recent memory will take the field September 12 in Buffalo and begin a long journey that fans hope will culminate in February.

Significant Offseason Additions/Subtractions

This Miami Dolphins roster has seen some big changes this past offseason. Gone is South Florida legend Jason Taylor, off to dress in the colors of a hated rival. Gone is Joey Porter, who has led the team in sacks in each of the past two seasons. Ineffective starting free safety Gibril Wilson was released. Starting inside linebacker Akin Ayodele was shown the door. Starting nose tackle Jason Ferguson abruptly retired. And defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni was handed his much-deserved pink slip.

But the holes were plugged with younger and more talented players. First round pick Jared Odrick and second round pick Koa Misi will step in right away and contribute. Karlos Dansby was handed a huge contract by Bill Parcells and GM Jeff Ireland to come in and be the centerpiece of this defense – one that will be run by new defensive coordinator Mike Nolan. Nolan might be the biggest offseason addition by this team, too.

Just don’t tell that to wide receiver Brandon Marshall, who the Dolphins acquired in a trade from Denver for two second-round picks. Don’t get me wrong – adding Marshall was a giant move by this team and one that is going to make a gigantic impact on the field. But Nolan’s expertise and experience is just as important to this team’s success in 2010.
Prediction for 2010 – Brandon Marshall and the playoff push

When you look at Miami’s schedule, it’s clear that their first eight games will make or break this team’s season. Six of their first eight are against teams that reached the postseason a year ago and include trips to Minnesota, Green Bay, Cincinnati, and Baltimore. Should the Dolphins come out of these eight games .500 or better, then at least 10 wins and a playoff berth are very much attainable. I could see the Dolphins winning as many as 12 games or as few as 8 in 2010. So I’ll take the middle ground and say the Dolphins go 10-6 and earn a Wildcard berth.

Colts And Packers Meet In A Preseason Showdown Of Super Bowl Favorites

Filed Under (NFL News) by admin on 27-08-2010

Tagged Under : , ,

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers will look to continue his letter- perfect preseason on Thursday night, when Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers welcome the Indianapolis Colts to Lambeau Field in the third preseason outing for each team.

Rodgers has a 154.0 passer rating in the warm-up period, completing 20-of-24 passes for 275 yards with three touchdowns and zero turnovers. Two of the three touchdown strikes came in last Saturday’s 27-24 win at the Seattle Seahawks, with tight end Jermichael Finley and fullback John Kuhn both notching scoring grabs for the Pack.

Among players with 10 or more passing attempts in the preseason to date, Rodgers is the NFL leader in passer rating. He is expected to play about a half on Thursday, in keeping with third-game-of-preseason tradition, before yielding to backup Matt Flynn.

Running back Brandon Jackson also comes off a solid outing against the Seahawks, as Ryan Grant’s backup carried 11 times for 80 yards in the contest.

Green Bay has some injury concerns at linebacker, where Nick Barnett (knee), A.J. Hawk (ankle), Brad Jones (shoulder) and Clay Matthews (hamstring) all missed last Saturday’s game and are question marks for the Indianapolis game.

The Colts, meanwhile, will come into Thursday’s contest seeking something that has been most-elusive for their franchise – a preseason win. Last Thursday’s 34-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Toronto dropped Indy to 4-20 in warm-up games since 2005, and a loss to Green Bay would guarantee a sixth consecutive losing preseason. Indianapolis hasn’t missed the playoffs since 2001, however, so another defeat would probably not incite panic in Hoosier country.

Quarterback Peyton Manning, who should play the first half on Thursday, was 8- of-15 for 91 yards, including an interception and a 21-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jacob Tamme, against the Bills. A 17-yard TD run for Joseph Addai was another of the offensive highlights for Indy.

The attack should get a boost on Thursday, as wideout Pierre Garcon, who has missed the first two preseason games with an undisclosed injury, is expected to suit up.

Elsewhere on the injury front for Indianapolis, tight end Dallas Clark (left leg), center Jeff Saturday (knee) and cornerback Jerraud Powers (foot) are not expected to participate against the Packers.

The Colts lead the all-time preseason series with the Packers, 5-3, including a 20-6 home victory in the last such meeting, prior to the 1996 season.

The teams last met in meaningful play in 2008 at Lambeau Field, a 34-14 Packers victory.

2010 NFL Preview – Philadelphia Eagles

Tagged Under : , , , , ,

nfl-jersey.net is counting down the days to the start of the 2010 NFL season with team-by-team previews. The previews are posted in descending order from worst to first.

In the span of two offseasons and just about one calender year, the Eagles let go or shipped off Brian Dawkins, Brian Westbrook, Sheldon Brown & Donovan McNabb. Those four made up the last remaining starters from the 2004 Superbowl team. In fact, only kicker David Akers and S Quintin Mikell (who was just a special teamer at the time) remain from that team. Goodness, the coach is still here.

Point is, the Eagles have moved on. That core of players had their shot (well, 10 shots I guess) and rather than keeping holding onto them for “one last run” and wondering if their “window had closed” the Eagles closed the window themselves and sold the house. The most amazing thing is that the team appears to have fully rebuilt itself without ever going through the pains you so often see “rebuilding” teams go through. They continued winning, continued making the playoffs and turned over their roster without anyone realizing it. The Eagles’ average age is now 24, and they’ve still got six pro bowlers on the squad.

In many ways the 2010 Eagles are better that the 2009 Eagles who won 11 games. So it’s really not unreasonable to expect at least the same, if not more from the 2010 squad. They’re healthier heading into the season, they’re more talented after a solid and defense heavy draft, and their young offensive weapons are a year smarter.  However, there’s the one big question mark hanging out there… “Is Kevin Kolb ready to be a starting QB in the NFL?” The answer to that question will ultimately be the one that defines the 2010 Eagles season. If he can play, I see no way this Eagles team won’t be contending for a playoff spot. If Kolb falters, then the Eagles could be looking at a long couple of years…

After spending a few weeks watching the team at training camp and feeling the loose, positive vibe around the team, I feel good about these 2010 Eagles. I’m predicting 10 wins and a wildcard berth.Welcome to the Kevin Kolb era. What’s your opinions?

Vikings Trade CB Benny Sapp To Dolphins In Exchange For WR Greg Camarillo

Filed Under (NFL News) by admin on 26-08-2010

Tagged Under : , , ,

We know the Dolphins sent WR Greg Camarillo to the Vikings. Now there’s word that the Vikings are sending CB Benny Sapp back to the Dolphins.

Brett Favre has a new receiver on the Minnesota Vikings.

Jeff Darlington of the Miami Herald reports the Miami Dolphins have traded WR Greg Camarillo to the Vikings.

The details of the trade aren’t known but Camarillo has confirmed the move to Darlington:

WR Greg Camarillo just texted me, as well. “I’m headed out of town this afternoon,” he says. “Crazy.” Yes, indeed. Very crazy.

Text from Greg Camarillo, Brett Favre’s newest WR: “Mixed emotions. Great opportunity, but this is home. These teammates are my brothers.”

Camarillo, 28, was originally an undrafted free agent. He played for the Chargers for two years before moving onto the Dolphins.

His most notable NFL moment came last in the 2007 season when he caught a 64-yard touchdown pass against the Baltimore Ravens. That play won them the game which happened to be their only win in the 2007 season.

In the last week, the Vikings have seen WR Percy Harvin collapse on the field and WR Sidney Rice have hip surgery. In response, they’ve signed WR Javon Walker and now Camarillo.

2010 NFL Preview – Atlanta Falcons

Everything points to a brighter tomorrow for the Dirty Birds, the Atlanta Falcons are a team on the rise, while that’s still a strange sentence to write for a long-suffering Falcons fan.Effective players are in the team now and the coaching staff on their way to pull it all together, the team has a long-term plan.

Legitimate concerns about the defense and play calling aside, this is a very good football team.  I’m sticking with my prediction of 10-6 with a Wild Card berth and some playoff success, though I don’t think the Falcons will be winning a Super Bowl this season. There’s a lot to be excited about here, and I expect this to be the first playoff season of many to come.

2010 NFL Preview – San Francisco 49ers

Filed Under (NFL Articles) by admin on 25-08-2010

Tagged Under : , , ,

nfl-jersey.net is counting down the days to the start of the 2010 NFL season with team-by-team previews. The previews are posted in descending order from worst to first.

The 49ers  are coming off an 8-8 campaign in 2009 that saw an incredibly up and down performance from the season. Last season can really be divided in two significant areas. The first was the return of Alex Smith to the starting QB position. As the 49ers realized the limited upside of Shaun Hill, Smith made a sparkling return against the Houston Texans  in week 7. He was a bit inconsistent over the rest of the season, but he showed some spark that had not been seen in some time. The second significant area is the defense, which gave up 56 points in the 49ers 8 wins, while giving up 225 points in their 8 losses. The biggest problem for the 2009 49ers was the inconsistency seen on the field.

Since the end of the 2009 season, the team made some important additions in the draft, retained some key personnel, and head into 2009 as the popular pick to win the NFC West. There are a variety of question marks on the team, but if they can answer them even a little bit, they should be able to claim the division and become a tough out in the playoffs.

The 49ers season could very well come down to what Alex Smith can do for the team. Due to the restructuring of his contract, he’s a free agent after this season, which means he has as much incentive for a big year as the 49ers would like. He’s got the weapons and he’s got the same offense. Really, there are no more excuses. That holds true for this entire 49ers team. They disappointed a bit last season and will need to find some level of offensive and defensive consistency if they want to finally return to the playoffs.

I think they will find that consistency and finish 10-6 while winning the NFC West. As far as a postseason run is concerned, this is the league of “Any Given Sunday” so anything is possible. I’d imagine that after hosting a wild card round game they’ll run into trouble with a New Orleans type of team, but crazy things happen in this league. A playoff berth would be a nice first step.

No more excuses for the 49ers.

2010 NFL Preview – Pittsburgh Steelers

nfl-jersey.net is counting down the days to the start of the 2010 NFL season with team-by-team previews. The previews are posted in descending order from worst to first.

Will the Pittsburgh Steelers get back to the playoffs ?

After a frustrating 2009 season and an even more disappointing offseason, Mike Tomlin has his sights set on getting the Pittsburgh Steelers  back on track in 2010. After a successful string of mini-camps this spring, a promising training camp, and a 2-0 start to the preseason, the Steelers now have their sights set on finishing the preseason injury-free and getting the party started in earnest against the Atlanta Falcons  in Week 1 of the regular season. The Steelers are flying under the national radar heading into the season, and for understandable reasons. They will be without their franchise quarterback for at least the first quarter of the regular season; their defense looked porous far too often last year, especially in the secondary late in games; and the offensive line is still a work in progress. Don’t sleep on the six-time Super Bowl champs though. There’s still plenty of firepower on both sides of the ball, and the roster is still chalk full of guys who have hoisted a Lombardi Trophy.

I’m not much of one for predictions, but given the state of affairs midway through the preseason, I feel comfortable predicting that the Steelers will be back in the playoffs this coming year with at least 10 wins. From there, as we all know, it’s anybody’s game. As was mentioned at the outset, the roster is full of guys who have excelled in the biggest of moments before. There’s no reason to think they can’t or won’t do so again if they can just get themselves back to the playoff party come January.

Jets Reportedly Offer Contract Extension To Darrelle Revis

Filed Under (NFL News) by admin on 23-08-2010

Tagged Under : ,

Hours after Dallas Morning News writer and ESPN “Around the Horn” panelist Tim Cowlishaw possibly broke the news on Sunday afternoon that the New York Jets and cornerback Darrelle Revis had reached an agreement on a long-term contract that would be announced Wednesday, several other prominent NFL reporters have cast doubt on Cowlishaw’s exclusive report.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen tweeted that his sources with the Jets have denied Cowlishaw’s report.

Newsday’s Bob Glauber cited a league source “familiar with the Revis situation” as saying that the report is inaccurate.

New York Daily News Jets beat writer Manish Mehta tweeted that the Jets and Revis have no plans to have a contract announcement on HBO this week, though communication lines remain open.

NFL.com’s Jason La Canfora announced that the Revis report was not correct and presumed that the error was the result of confusion as to which player was making progress in contract negotiations with the team. According to him, that player is center Nick Mangold.

ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio is also pushing the likelihood that Mangold is the player who is most likely next to receive a contract extension with the Jets.

Shortly after Cowlishaw first reported the impending deal, he tweeted that he expected other Jets writers to shoot down his report, and that Jets officials would deny it, since it’s not Wednesday yet. While it’s possible that he’s the lone correct voice beating back a mob of doubters, Cowlishaw better hope his prediction comes to pass on Wednesday, lest he have a lot of egg on his face.

Bills Shawn Nelson Suspended For Violating Substance Abuse Policy

Filed Under (NFL News) by admin on 23-08-2010

Tagged Under : , , , ,

The Buffalo Bills will be without TE Shawn Nelson for the first four games of the season. The NFL released a statement on Friday that Nelson has been suspended the first four games of the year for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. The suspension will come without pay.

There have been no reports on what caused the suspension but, as SB Nation’s Buffalo Rumblings points out, it does mean that he is a repeat offender. First-time offenders are put into a confidential intervention program.

His suspension will start on Saturday, Sept. 4 and continue on until Monday, Oct. 4 after the Bills play the Jets in week four. That means he can still participate in preseason practices and games.

This is a big blow to the Bills because they need as many offensive weapons as they can get. The Bills lost TE Derek Schouman to injury against the Colts on Thursday night but it’s unclear how severe his knee injury is.

The Bills will now work with Jonathan Stupar and Michael Matthews at tight end.

Buffalo Rumblings thinks this development may put the Bills in the market for a tight end before the season opener.
